The eccentricities of 1990 costumesThe 1990's is not exactly characterized by eccentricity. In fact, the 90’s was a decade of simplicity. People got tired of glamorous designs for everyday wear. At the beginning of the decade, some trends typical of the 80’s such as heavy make up on the eyes and lips remained. It also remained the hoop earring on men. But by the mid 90’s a lot of these fashions began to disappear. Hairstyle in the 80’s used to be very voluminous and important for one’s look. At the beginning of the nineties we could still see this trend now and then, but natural hairstyles that don’t need too much spray began to gain more popularity. However, in the mid 90's a new hairstyle trend appeared for girls, which was popularized by Jennifer Aniston, the actress that plays Rachael in the TV series “Friends”. This hairdo was short and pompous and there were always a few bleached tufts. In spite of this, there were many trends that emerged and remained popular for some time in the 90’s. We can't say that these fashions are characteristic of 1990 costumes, but we can certainly say they gained a lot of popularity at the time. Although simplicity and casual clothing was one of the most characteristic features of 1990 costumes, their designs were not always based on simplicity. There were many trends that appeared in the 1990’s that were at that time a hit, and today a good laugh. The 90’s has provided us with many eccentric fashion styles. Among them we find neon color clothing. This type of clothing was extremely popular in the 1990’s and was connected with technological development and modernity. This trend had never been seen before the 90’s. Although we today look back and think it was completely ridiculous, this 1990 costumes fashion opened the door to more color alternative even for our current fashions. Neon color clothing was also associated with beach, surf and fun. The secret about these 1990 costumes trend was to wear colors that don’t match. Pink and sky blue, green and orange were possible combinations that would look extremely fashionable. Today we wouldn't think of combining those colors, but in the 90’s you could find t-shirts, dresses, pants, jackets and even shoes of fluorescent colors. This fashion disappeared by the middle of the decade when people finally realized that it was too much! However, this 1990 costumes trend has left more possibilities for fashion designers as in the past no designer would have thought of using any of those colors in their designs. Today we can find beautiful tops, dresses and other items in fluorescent colors. Another eccentric fashion of the 90’s was rap fashion. This 1990 costumes fashion appeared with rap music. Although this music gender appeared before the 90’s, during this decade rap music changed and so did fashion. Rap lyrics began to deal with subjects related to street experience, family violence and dark backgrounds. Many people felt identified with these lyrics and soon a new 1990 costumes fashion was created. People wore these clothes to show they suffered from problems related to these lyrics, or they sympathized with these people and supported them. Young boys would walk around the street with huge loose pants that would show their underpants, big shoes, bandannas and gaps, and generally a skateboard and a set of walkmans on hand. This fashion became really popular in the early 90’s and it’s still in vogue today. Another eccentric 1990 costumes fashion appeared at the end of the 90's. Suddenly women's fashion got feminine, and everything was pink and full of glitters. Both pop stars, like Britney Spears, and rock stars, like Gwen Stefani and Courtney Love, experimented this fashion. But it was not only a girls' fashion. Many men wore glitters and pink color during this era. Glittering lip stick consumption increased tremendously, as well as all kind of accessories, such as bags, hats, necklaces and bracelets, and items of clothing that would glitter. This fashion didn't last long, but it certainly shone through. Body piercing and tattoos were the most eccentric fashion of the 90’s. Although their existence dates million of years A.D. body piercing and tattoos gained great popularity during the last decade of the millennium. Rock bands were the main influences. Although these trends have ceased, they haven’t come out of fashion yet. Today, we still love them. |
