Grunge music is a music genre that appeared in the middle of the 80’s but that gained popularity all around the world in the 90’s. Bands such as Nirvana led grunge music to success. This type of music is characteristic by the use of distorted guitars and a hoarse voice. Grunge music reflected generally a depressing and empathic mood and this was perfectly reflected on the clothes grunge musicians and fans wore.

Grunge 1990 clothing was characterized by tore stonewashed blue jeans, the classic Chuck Taylor All-Star and Dr. Martens boots, plaid woodcutter-like shirts, which was generally worn open, over a plain t-shirt. These t-shirts could bear some printed message, which was generally aggressive or insulting. Hairstyle was shabby and if your hair could look like hay, that's great! Red hair and other strange color hair like blue were very popular.

This 1990 clothing style was intended to reflect rebellion. This look was representative of guitars and rock n’ roll as well as discomfort at the world and fashions. It is believed that this type of music emerged as a way to complain and express this discomfort at society. Grunge 1990 clothing was also a reflection of all this. The aim of this untidy look was to express an anti-materialistic and anti-consumer attitude.

Kurt Cobain was the most influential star on this 1990 clothing style. When he was first seen in his tore jeans and grandpa sweaters, every young boy wanted to look just like him. All Guns N' Roses' members had hairstyles that were similar to the hairstyle that was popular in the 80’s. They also wore leather jackets and a lot of chains (in the case of Slash, the guitarist of the band) which was very common in the 80’s. However, the band’s look is very characteristic and new and this is why it was considered a 1990 clothing trend.

Although Rap Music is as old as the hills, it was in the 90’s that this music style changed drastically. Traditional rhyme schemes were changed, and the lyrics flow was freer. The subject matter of rap music also changed drastically, and this is perhaps the most important reason why rap gained so much popularity in the 90’s. For the first time, songs lyrics were about street experiences and social and economic problems. Many people felt identified with this, and this is how this music style as well as the 1990 clothing fashion became a hit real soon.

Extremely loose t-shirts and pants that would fall on the back making underpants visible, bandannas, gaps, huge sneakers, were the new 1990 clothing trend. However, this new fashion also fomented violence among young boys.

It is unbelievable how influential music can be on clothing fashions and trends. This seems to be something that will never end. In the 60's and 70's, musicians like The Beatles or Elvis Presley created new styles that were soon wore by everyone all around the world. The most controversial fashions were long hairstyle and broad sideburns. This wouldn't have happened if the fans didn't like their music. They would have just said that these people who played ugly songs looked like crazy people. In the 80’s, Madonna and Michael Jackson also put into fashions their own trends, such as gloves, lacy clothes and leather jackets.
