1990 clothes and Trends

The fashion of the 1990’s is characterized by its diversity. After decades of definite fashions, the 90’s decade has presented itself as a decade of changing styles. There is not a definite and distinguishable trend that we can associate with this era, but a series of different fashions that gave this period an identity.

At the beginning of the decade, 1990 clothes were pretty similar to 1980 clothes. Many trends remained for a few years; however, they gradually started to disappear. As with everything, people started to get tired of those sophisticated fashions that characterized previous decades. This led to the birth of new fashions. But this time, people wanted variety. 1990 clothes are characteristic because of that: variety.

The fashion of the 80’s implied too much care and time. Both men and women spent a long time doing their hair and make up. This mood changed during the 90’s, when people didn’t want to spend so much time on their looks.

Spray-heavy hairstyle was no longer fashionable in the 90's. Both men and women preferred long, natural hairstyles, although hair products, such as spray and mouse, were still common. Long hair in men is very characteristic of the 90’s. As regards women's hairstyle, one of the most influential stars of the 90's is Jennifer Aniston, one of the main characters of the TV series “Friends”. Jennifer Aniston, with her role of “Rachel” created a new fashion trend that was soon popular all around the world.

As regards clothes, 1990 clothes fashion was so varied that everyone wore whatever they wanted. Different trends appeared during the 90's and they co-existed all together. One of the most characterizing trends of this decade was the Grunge fashion, a 1990 clothes style that appeared with Grunge music. The main representation of this movement was Kurt Cobain from Nirvana. He made the plaid woodcutter-like shirt and stonewashed jeans a hit. Not only Nirvana's fans would wear those 1990 clothes, but also other bands who tried to imitate them and their fans.

Rap music was also very popular during the 90's. Rap music had great influence on 1990 clothes and for this reason a new fashion emerged. Loose t-shirts and pants, visible underpants, gaps and bandannas were the elements that made up this fashion. This new 1990 clothes style was so popular that it still remains today.

Body piercing and tattoos also got popular during the 90’s. This new fashion gave place to the creation of new 1990 clothes trends. For example, when navel piercing became a hit, belly shirts where introduced and they were very popular among girls of all ages.

Above I have provided a list of different trends that have emerged in the 90's. However, this is far too incomplete. This occurs because the 90's is a decade of individuality. Each person wanted to express themselves as they wanted without sticking too much to one fashion. People also wanted to dress casual and comfortable, and that is why all the extravagancies of the 80's disappeared in the mid 90's.
